Mathematical Modeling of Cell Polarization

Cell polarization occurs in many types of cells during intracellular processes such as cell movement and neuronal development. We consider three PDE models for cell polarization in rod-shaped fission yeast, spherically-shaped budding yeast, and the neuronal growth cone, respectively. In each case, there is some form of positive feedback involving the interaction among membrane-bound molecules, cytosolic molecules, and (or) microtubule/actin filaments. We explore the roles of diffusion and active transport of cytosolic molecules along cytoskeletal filaments on the establishment of a polarized distribution of membrane-bound molecules.
