Professor Tak's main research interest is astro-statistics. In preparation for the era of the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST), he has closely worked with astronomers and astrophysicists to analyze astronomical time series and image data, developing practically motivated data analytic tools. Specifically, his research interest in astro-statistics is about time delay cosmography based on strong gravitational lensing to infer the Hubble constant, the current expansion rate of the Universe. It involves analyzing both brightness time series data of gravitationally lensed quasar images and high-quality image data of the lensed quasar and lensing galaxy. In using statistical tools, he seeks for a unification between Bayesian and frequentist to take advantage of their strong points, e.g., Bayesian hierarchical modeling and frequentist model evaluation. He is also interested in developing statistical methods, such as robust statistics and Markov chain Monte Carlo, that are practically motivated by real-world problems in astronomy.
