A Vision for Computational/Applied Calculus
Computational tools can allow us to bypass some of the procedural work that goes into solving a problem and cut to the core, uncovering new ideas and keeping an eye on the context of the problem. In this talk I will present my vision for teaching an applied calculus sequence that utilizes computation as a primary strategy for learning both inside and outside of the classroom. Students will not only learn how to use the computational tools at their disposal but will use them to learn conceptual ideas. As an example, I will explain how a CAS such as Mathematica can be used to motivate the ideas behind and help students develop an intuitive understanding of the first and second derivative tests.
