Public Health as a Team Sport: The Impact of Science and Technology
Global public health is more important and exciting now than ever. Mountains of data are being generated every day, and now, we know how to use it. Today’s technology and scientific methods allow us to glean real-time insights from these data, enriching population and patient health across the globe. This talk will discuss how data scientists, epidemiologists, medical experts and engineers can solve problems together using examples within Elite Sports, from the NFL and NBA to the Tokyo Olympics, as well as within drug development and FDA regulation processes, using innovative and groundbreaking approaches to teamwork.
Christina Mack is the Chief Scientific Officer of Real World Solutions at IQVIA, an S&P 500 company with global operations in over 100 countries. She is responsible for driving scientific and technical innovation that has a direct impact improving patient health, and leads the IQVIA Surveillance and Agile Analytics Team, which partners with global health organizations, biopharmaceutical companies and elite sports leagues such as the NFL and NBA to prevent disease, reduce injuries and improve population health and safety. Her research has been published broadly in top journals including the CDC’s Mortality and Morbidity Weekly Report, JAMA, American Journal of Sports Medicine, and Annals of Internal Medicine. Dubbed a "SWAT Epidemiologist" by the Washington Post and a Top 20 Influencer of the 2020 NFL Season by NBC Sports, Dr. Mack has applied her formal training in Computer Science Engineering (ND '02) and Epidemiology (MSPH/PhD, UNC-Chapel Hill) to practical application of data science to public health problems over the course of her career.
In addition to her role as ND faculty, Dr. Mack holds an Adjunct Associate Professor of Epidemiology at the University of North Carolina Gillings School of Global Public health. She serves as a board member and advisor for Duke-Margolis Center for Health Policy, the FDA Medical Device Epidemiology Network Scientific Oversight Committee, World Economic Forum Women and Girl’s initiative, and numerous academic and private organizations on topics that include research methods, product effectiveness, data science, global health and disease prevention. She is passionate about the power of science to impact change, women in STEM, careers and mentorship, and is a frequently invited speaker on these and other topics.
