Career Options for Women in Mathematical Sciences Workshop

Author: Kathy Phillips

In March, ACMS graduate students Amy Buchmann and Weiye (Betty) Chen attended the Career Options for Women in Mathematical Sciences at the Institute for Mathematics and its Applications (IMA). This workshop is designed to show women the various professional opportunities in mathematics in the areas of academics, industry, and government.  Women in all three areas presented the various projects they are working on and talked about the opportunities to get involved.  A panel discussion about work-life balance, and the future of mathematics was also held.  During the poster session for graduate students, Ms. Buchmann presented a poster on “Myxococcus xanthus Cluster Formation”, and Ms. Chen presented a poster on “The Economic Gains of Alternative Markowitz Portfolios in the Foreign Exchange Market.”  The workshop provided a great opportunity to meet other women in mathematics and learn about career options.
