ACMS Consulting Center

The ACMS Consulting Center provides statistical, mathematical, and computational support for researchers at Notre Dame.  Center staff work with faculty, students, and research teams on study design, data analysis, and the methods sections of grants and papers, so that the quantitative side of a project is sound from planning through publication.

Who we work with

The center works with Notre Dame faculty, staff, postdoctoral researchers, and graduate and undergraduate students in any department. Students should include their advisor or PI on the request. The center also works with external partners and friends of Notre Dame, with a fee-structure to be negotiated.

How we can help

  • Study and experimental design
  • Power and sample size calculations
  • Statistical analysis and modeling, including Bayesian, spatial and spatiotemporal, causal inference, mixed models, and machine learning methods
  • Methods and analysis plans for grant proposals
  • Code review and reproducibility
  • Manuscript methods sections and responses to reviewers
  • Data management planning
  • Training and short workshops

How it works

  1. Submit a request. Complete the online request form with a short, plain-language description of your project, its timeline, and the kind of help you need.
  2. Hear back within five business days. You will receive an automatic confirmation right away and a response from the center within five business days. Requests with near-term deadlines, such as a grant submission or journal revision, are reviewed first.
  3. Meet to scope the project. We meet to agree on the questions, deliverables, timeline, and expectations for credit (acknowledgment or co-authorship).
  4. Work together. The center supports the project through regular meetings and agreed deliverables until it is complete.

Before you submit

  • Please do not include data, results, or information that could identify research participants in the request form.  We will discuss data access and storage once a project is scoped.
  • Projects involving human subjects should have IRB approval or be in the approval process before analysis begins.
  • Contact us as early as possible.  Involving a statistician at the design stage usually saves time later, and requests with hard deadlines under 30 days may be limited by capacity.

Cost

Consultations are available at no cost to Notre Dame researchers.  For larger projects, we may discuss including center effort on a grant.  For external clients and collaborators, fee-structure will be discussed in the initial scoping meeting.
