The Role of Excitatory-inhibitory Balance in Neural Computation and Learning

How does learning and computation emerge from the complex interactions of interconnected neurons in the brain? One hint is provided by the ubiquitous balance between excitatory and inhibitory interactions in the cerebral cortex. This project aims to study the implications of excitatory-inhibitory balance on the relationship between neural connectivity and neural activity and its implications for learning.
